How to become a General Mediator

Candidates seeking to be an accredited mediator of the HKMAAL must have at least 3 years full-time working experience prior to submitting their application for consideration by the HKMAAL Mediation Accreditation Committee (MAC).


Stage 1 - Training Course

Satisfactory completion of a HKMAAL approved mediation training course of 40 hours minimum duration.


Stage 2 - Assessment

Mediate at least two HKMAAL simulated general (non-family) mediation cases.

After successful completion of two HKMAAL simulated general (non-family) mediation cases, a candidate is required to obtain 2 completed Form 1 with comments from the assessor on the candidate’s performance, indicating that the candidate has satisfied the HKMAAL that an acceptable level of competence as a mediator has been achieved.

(*subject to latest COVID situation and the applicable Government's policies on social distancing. HKMAAL may have to cancel any scheduled or confirmed assessments upon short notice should circumstances require.)

Stage 3 - Application

After completion of stages 1 and 2, candidates may apply to HKMAAL for accreditation attaching the following:

  • Form MA1
  • Two Form 1, together with two settlement agreements
  • Stage 1 Mediation Training Course Certificate
  • Application fee ($600)
  • Annual Panel fee ($900)

The above fees should be made payable to the "Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Limited".

Prior to accreditation being approved, a candidate for mediation accreditation may be called by the HKMAAL to take part in an accreditation assessment including a personal interview and a possible further simulation supervised by a suitably qualified person chosen by the HKMAAL who must submit a completed Form 1 in connection with the further simulation.

Candidates who are accredited may, subject to complying with all the requirements, choose to have their names included on the Panel of HKMAAL Accredited General Mediators.

For the purpose of assessing applications for accreditation, the Stage 2 assessment result shall be valid for 3 years from the date of the notification of that result.

Important Notes

  1. The time limit for successful completion of HKMAAL Stage 2 Assessment (i.e. two (2) passes and recommendations have been obtained from two HKMAAL Assessors) is 3 years from the date of satisfactory completion of Stage 1 mediation training course.
  2. Mediation Trainees who have completed a Stage 1 mediation training course may apply to the HKMAAL Mediation Accreditation Committee ("MAC”) for extending the time limit for Stage 2 Assessment for the relevant course. The applicant should provide reason(s) for seeking an extension on the time limit.  An administration fee of HK$500 is payable upon such application
  3. The MAC would only grant extension on exceptional basis, for example: a Mediation Trainee who has not taken any Stage 2 Assessment within the first 3 year period of a relevant course will not generally have the time limit of his/her course extended by the MAC.  
  4. For the purpose of assessing applications for accreditation, the Stage 2 assessment result shall be valid for 3 years from the date of the notification of that result.
  5. Candidates will only be informed of the results of the HKMAAL Stage 2 Assessments by post 3 weeks after the relevant assessments. The result will not be disclosed by telephone or by e-mail.
  6. Candidates will only be informed of their Stage 3 result by post 3 weeks after the relevant scheduled meeting of the HKMAAL MAC where their application is considered. The result will not be disclosed by telephone or by e-mail.
  7. For consideration by the HKMAAL MAC at an upcoming meeting, candidates are required to submit their applications two (2) weeks before the scheduled meeting of the HKMAAL MAC. For dates of the meetings of the HKMAAL MAC, please click here.

Application for Mediator Accreditation / re-assessment fee per assessment / re- assessment (non-refundable): 600
Application fee for Exemption from any or all of the stages of the accreditation requirement: 600
Panel Fee per category upon successful accreditation (covering the period from the Date of Accreditation* to 31 December of the same year):  

*1: The Date of Accreditation shall be the calendar day on which the HKMAAL MAC approves the application for accreditation.

*2: If the Date of Accreditation happens to fall into the period between 1 September to 31 December, the Panel Fee upon successful accreditation shall cover the period staring from that Date of Accreditation to 31 December of the FOLLOWING year)
