Conversion Process

(1) Accreditation Process for Family Mediators to become General Mediators

(i) 3-day Conversion seminar (compulsory)
An independent course provider conducts the 3-day conversion course for Family Mediators seeking to become General Mediators. The purpose of the conversion course is to prepare the candidate for HKMAAL Stage 2 Assessments.

(ii) Two HKMAAL Stage 2 Assessments
For family accredited mediators, the candidate is required to complete at least two HKMAAL simulated general (non-family) mediation cases.


(2) Accreditation Process for General Mediators to become Family Mediators

(i) 5-day Conversion Course (compulsory)
An independent course provider conducts the 5-day conversion course for General mediators seeking to become family mediators.

(ii) Supervised Live Family Mediation
Trainees should participate in two live family mediations under the supervision of different Supervisors. Each case shall be of a minimum of five hours and must be sufficiently complex for the trainees to demonstrate the ability to manage emotional intensity and mediate complex financial and child related matters.

(a) The trainee may refer to the HKMAAL's website for a list of approved Supervisors. The trainee may nominate a Supervisor from the list subject to latter's consent.

(b) The trainee may also consider enrolling in the Family Mediation Supervision Pilot Scheme jointly run by HKMAAL and the Judiciary since July 2014.
